 Job the Schnauzer

Painting: “Job the Schnauzer”

Medium: Oil Paint

Size: 11” x 14” on Canvas Board

When Adam and I were planning our nuptials, we considered Job the Schnauzer (his family pet who was more like an adopted younger brother) to be our ring bearer. So much so, that I purchased a handsome little puppy tuxedo for him.  When we realized he was a little to “barky” for the job, we opted not to go that route.  He looked darling in it however.  Mister Job passed away about a month ago, rest his little doggy soul. We will miss you little guy!

 Great Aunt Ada’s Tea Service

Painting: “Great Aunt Ada’s Tea Service”

Medium: Oil Paint

Size: 11” x 14” on Canvas Board

This Tea Service is gorgeous, it belongs to my mother-in-law and was passed down to her from her aunt Ada. The shapes of the pieces are a phenomenal melon profile that show interesting reflections. I couldn’t wait to paint it!

This past weekend was a blast, the art tour went very well, but I do have to say it was exhausting.  All the prep work and hours did make a difference though, and it was lovely to have so many visitors and fellow artists and art enthusiasts through my studio.  Thank you to all who came to support the local artists! I did paint during the show, my work in progress was the “Simms Family Portrait”, which is coming along swimmingly and I think I am almost half done!

Simms Family Portrait with Artist Eva Robertson

Here I am in my little set up for the weekend painting my heart out.

 Simms Family Portrait in Progress

The contrast in this photo is amazing, so I started painting the dark background base color using burnt umber, yellow ochre, lamp black and a smidgen of french ultramarine blue.

 Simms Family Portrait with computer

Adam set up a computer beside my easel, which is just GREAT for zooming in for close ups, this comes in handy for detailing facial features and getting accurate shapes.

 Simms Family Portrait Eva painting

I started to paint the legs, arms and faces in warmer tones.  I am taking a bit of artistic liberty in warming up the shot, remember the photo has aged over 80 years since it was taken and has yellowed a bit, the greens are a tad sickly and I want the Simms to look their best for their portrait debut! I have also noticed that I need to have a better painting posture.

Simms Family Portrait in Porgress 2

The basic color of their skin is finished, I realize they look washed out, but I am only a third of the way done here. I was really tempted to use burnt sienna (my favorite adding color), but this would have probably changed the original colors drastically.  Burnt umber and white will have to do.

Simms Family Portrait almost there

Here it is as it stands today, I am so glad Mary wore a shimmery dress that day, the light caught on her sleeves is beautiful and I fear it would have blended into the background if it didn’t have that little bit of something.  I still have a bit of work to do on the faces and background, but I am well on my way.

Simms Family Portrait original picture

This is the fabulous photo I have been eagerly awaiting for.  It is a photo of my husband’s great grandmother and her eldest four children, it was taken in Carbonear Newfoundland a looong time ago. I am going to be replicating this photo in an oil painting. It was taken at a Sunday school picnic by a photographer, and she paid $3.50 to have it taken.  The price is still written on the back.  What I love about this photo:

1. It has Adam’s family in it, I find family history very interesting.

2. The children’s clothes! I think Mary Simms (The mother) sewed all of them herself.

3. Sara Ash, Mary’s neighbor is hiding in the back of the photo (you can see her peeking from behind Mary just above her hat), she did not want to pay for a photo but wouldn’t move out of the frame! And she is even holding up her baby so it would get in the shot too!!!! Hilarious!

Simms Family Portrait Rough Sketch

Here is my sketch of this photo I started this morning. The size of the canvas is 16″ x 20″. I did consider removing Sara from the painting, but the story of this picture is so well known in the family I just couldn’t do that.

Simms Family Portrait baby Beth

This is the baby; Elizabeth Simms, she was called Beth. I love her little wisps of hair and how she is squinting in the sun.  That is her baby pram in the background where the ladies have set their hats.

 Simms Family Portrait Sarah Ash

Wow, there is Sarah Ash standing just behind Mary’s hat in all her glory.

Simms family Portrait Spray with Lacquer

Once I am done my pencil drawing I spray the canvas with clear lacquer so it doesn’t smudge or turn my white paint dull by mixing with the graphite.

 Simms Family Portrait Drying

There.  Now I will wait for it to dry and I can start painting it soon.  This is the main piece I hope to be working on during my Artist Studio Tour next weekend!
